- he will refrain from drinking wine,
- he will travel alone and won't look for trouble.

However, Zhu Gui, will be sent to look after our fierce hero and the travellers who will be enough unlucky to encounter this mighty figure.

All these precautions will be vain : Li Kui will do what he wants and get in danger. Whatever recommandations Zhu Gui and his brother Zhu Fu will give, he will take the most dangerous road and will have to fight against a false Black Whirlwind before he can reach his mother's house.
Unconscious of the risks, he will lead his blind mother on a mount where she will be killed by tigers. In revenge, he will kill 4 tigers with his bare hands and become an hero until he is recognised and sent to jail as a Liangshan outlaw.

He will be saved by Zhu Gui, Zhu Fu and Li Yun and will come back safe to the stronghold of Song Jiang and Chao Gai.

He will never be able to refrain from his murderous temptation and will kill many people in spite of Song Jiang's admonestations.
